In recent weeks, most restaurants and cafes have been forced to shut their doors or significantly change their business model, leaving many favourite local venues closed and thousands of talented staff in the hospitality industry either stood down, or without a job. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that since lockdown, a staggering 82% of hospitality jobs have been lost.
Save our Locals
Save Our Locals is an online market supporting local cafés and restaurants with an alternative income stream to keep their lights on and staff employed. The initiative supports restaurants by delivering fresh meal kits to home cooks – giving them the opportunity to recreate chefs’ restaurant signature dishes simply at home. Save Our Locals meal kits make inspired results easy to recreate at home, with all the hard work and prep done by chefs to ensure home cooks get restaurant-quality results every time, in their own kitchen.
Australians are adjusting to being at home and have returned to hobbies like cooking to keep themselves occupied. Since lockdown began, there has been a 71% increase in time spent on cooking websites, with young people spending 144% more time following online recipes. This surge in interest represented a great opportunity for foodservice businesses to service this shift in demand for quality food, created at home.
“One of our core values at Nestlé Professional is ‘find a way’ and we are living that through the much-needed income that every ‘Save Our Locals’ meal-kit order will bring to local businesses. There is a whole ecosystem attached to the hospitality industry and it’s heartening to think that together we can step-up and make a difference for our valued partners. We will not let our much-loved local restaurants and cafes disappear. It would be a huge loss and change the character of local life forever. We’re proud to support Save Our Locals as our way of saying we are here for you and we always will be.”
With Save Our Locals, Nestlé Professional along with other industry sponsors are offering a lifeline that through delivering ready-to-cook meal kits, allows home cooks to visit: Saveourlocals.com.au/register. To order as a customer, visit saveourlocals.com.au
Another great example of industry support is from Hospitality magazine, the leading industry title who has launched #HospitalityStrong. The go-to hub is crammed full of useful resources, news, support and insights for foodservice professionals designed to find new ways to forge ahead.
Content is organised into six key areas: Support and Advice; Venue Initiatives; Partner Content; Products and Offers; Government and State News; and Profiles of Innovative Operators.
Group Publisher at Food & Beverage Media Paul Wootton explained traffic to the Hospitality website had nearly doubled since the lockdown began.
“It’s a challenging time for hospitality businesses to say the least and operators and business owners are hungry for information to help their venues survive,” he said. “At Hospitality magazine, we want to play our part in supporting the industry so we created a hub chock-full of useful advice and ideas to help businesses navigate the crisis. There are many stories of resilient operators working hard and smart to mitigate the effects of the lockdown and we’re shining a light on them too in the hope they’ll inspire others.”
We couldn’t have created the #HospitalityStrong hub without the generous support and involvement of our partners like Nestlé Professional, to whom we’re extremely grateful.”
