P&O Buondi Barista Competition 2023

P&O Buondi Barista Competition 2023

Ever tried a coffee made by a champion barista? Now you can, while cruising the Pacific!

After an involuntary three-year hiatus, P&O’s annual barista competition is back. The competition has been a staple in the 20-year-plus partnership between Nestlé Professional and P&O. 2023 also marks 90 years since P&O commenced sailing in Australia.

The first of three competitions happened on March 20th onboard the Pacific Adventure, docked in Sydney’s Circular Quay.

Six talented baristas were selected to compete from 92 bar staff who service the ship. Their challenge was to create an espresso, flat white and cappuccino for each of the of the judges using BUONDI Dark Spark roasted coffee beans – the blend used onboard the cruise ships.

A panel comprising senior P&O and Nestlé Professional judges observed the competitors’ technical ability, cleanliness, and self-conduct.

“We were looking for a golden-brown crema on the espresso, a full-bodied mouthfeel and a well-balanced taste,” says Jo Yuen, Master Barista at Nestle Professional.

In addition to their technical skills, the Baristas gave a brief talk while preparing the beverages, explaining to the judges the brown sugar aroma and caramel tasting notes of BUONDI Dark Spark.

“The dark roast cuts through milk well and delivers a rich tasting coffee, which is perfect for our guests who enjoy their coffee with milk,” said Michelle, P&O barista.

All six competitors delivered to a very high standard, but there had to be one winner. Ultimately, it came down to a show of exceptional latte art skills and superior attention to detail behind the machine.

Gilbert Mapa (Bar Waiter, at NZN Ice Cream & Coffee Bar) took the crown to become Pacific Adventure’s champion barista, with Michelle Fernandez (Bartender, Charlie’s Bar) the runner-up.

“The staff are very proud of their coffee knowledge. Events like this keep them engaged and give them the opportunity to showcase their passion,” said Graham Willshere, Senior Manager Guest Experience - Bar Operations, Systems & Hotel Compliance at P&O.

Awarding

P&O’s two other cruise ships currently docked in Australia – the Pacific Explorer (currently sailing from Adelaide) and the Pacific Encounter (currently sailing from Brisbane), will have their respective barista competitions within the next month.

We will keep our eyes peeled for the next two winners. One thing is for sure - P&O’s baristas know how to make an amazing cup of coffee, prepared with the great roasted coffee beans from BUONDI.

Next time you’re onboard, keep an eye out for the new champion barista, and make sure you experience a great cup of coffee yourself!
