Transforming Cocoa Communities

Nestlé and the Rainforest Alliance: Helping to transform Cocoa Communities Together

The Nestle Cocoa Plan

To make great chocolate, you need sustainably sourced cocoa.

Life can be challenging where cocoa is grown. That’s why we developed the Nestlé Cocoa Plan. The Nestlé Cocoa Plan aims to build a brighter future in cocoa farming communities and improve the lives of cocoa-growers.

Through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan, we are working with farmers, communities and local and international organisations to develop and implement solutions to the numerous challenges facing cocoa-farming communities and build a more sustainable supply chain for cocoa.

The Nestlé Cocoa Plan is built on three pillars:

Better Farming
Better Farming
We’re providing training and resources to help cocoa farmers improve yields and quality of produce. These promote positive agricultural practices and diversified income sources.
Better Lives
Better Lives
When women are given more autonomy, communities thrive. We’re working to improve gender equality and household revenues by incentivising greater access to education. This also helps to prevent child labour risks.

We are aiming to improve product sustainability, by making our cocoa supply chain more transparent and traceable, focusing on moving towards cocoa forest-positive actions.

Rainforest Alliance Certification

Rainforest Alliance Seal

The Rainforest Alliance and Nestlé have partnered to promote sustainability in Nestlé’s cocoa supply chain and in the cocoa sector more broadly. We source all our certified cocoa from Rainforest Alliance-Certified farms, helping to create a more sustainable cocoa supply chain and tackle social and environmental issues.

This partnership works on two key interventions:

1. Certification: Many of the farmers participating in the Nestlé Cocoa Plan are also certified by the Rainforest Alliance. Rainforest Alliance Certification helps farmers produce better crops, adapt to climate change, increase their productivity, and reduce costs.

You’ve probably seen the little green frog on some of your favourite products, but what does it really mean?

The frog is the symbol of the Rainforest Alliance Certification Program. A product with the seal means the RFA is working with farmers to grow specific crops more sustainably, creating a better future for people and nature.

2. Monitoring and Evaluation: To track the progress of its Nestlé Cocoa Plan and to improve its interventions, Nestlé has partnered with the Rainforest Alliance since 2016 to monitor and evaluate the Nestlé Cocoa Plan’s outcomes.
